Being poor on architecture I'm wondering what the official term is for the "American Stereotype Haunted" house-style favored by the Addamses and the Bateses. The sort with the cute turrets and the steep roofs topped with spiky-railed platforms. (I don't think there's a British Stereotype Haunted style, which is maybe a pity.)

After poking around for a while, my best guess is Second Empire. http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&q=second+empire+house+architecture&btnG=Search+Images

I was going to say "Victorian," but that struck me as a little generic. A bit of Googling turned up Second Empire. This house in particular seems almost taken out of that Charles Addams cartoon.

(They might also have a touch of Queen Anne thrown in, but it's mostly Second Empire.)

Thanks, guys. :) Second Empire sounds exactly right, turrets and roof and all. (I can see why they're so popular with ghosts and creepy livingfolk - the great boxy roofs must make for magnificently hauntable attics.)
