Monday Afternoon Poem: Nostalgia
Nostalgia.
Remember the 1340’s? We were doing a dance called the Catapult.
You always wore brown, the color craze of the decade,
and I was draped in one of those capes that were popular,
the ones with unicorns and pomegranates in needlework.
Everyone would pause for beer and onions in the afternoon,
and at night we would play a game called “Find the Cow.”
Everything was hand-lettered then, not like today.
Where has the summer of 1572 gone? Brocade and sonnet
marathons were the rage. We used to dress up in the flags
of rival baronies and conquer one another in cold rooms of stone.
Out on the dance floor we were all doing the Struggle
while your sister practiced the Daphne all alone in her room.
We borrowed the jargon of farriers for our slang.
These days language seems transparent, a badly broken code.
The 1790’s will never come again. Childhood was big.
People would take walks to the very tops of hills
and write down what they saw in their journals without speaking.
Our collars were high and our hats were extremely soft.
We would surprise each other with alphabets made of twigs.
It was a wonderful time to be alive, or even dead.
I am very fond of the period between 1815 and 1821.
Europe trembled while we sat still for our portraits.
And I would love to return to 1901 if only for a moment,
time enough to wind up a music box and do a few dance steps,
or shoot me back to 1922 or 1941, or at least let me
recapture the serenity of last month when we picked
berries and glided through afternoons in a canoe.
Even this morning would be an improvement over the present.
I was in the garden then, surrounded by the hum of bees
and the Latin names of flowers, watching the early light
flash off the slanted windows of the greenhouse
and silver the limbs on the rows of dark hemlocks.
As usual, I was thinking about the moments of the past,
letting my memory rush over them like water
rushing over the stones on the bottom of a stream.
I was even thinking a little about the future, that place
where people are doing a dance we cannot imagine,
a dance whose name we can only guess.

Third time announcement's the charm...
Those of you who didn't see this on FA or on my isocommunity... I will only be at Midwest Furfest in very limited capacity, mostly Friday morning/afternoon and Monday morning. I will NOT be in the dealers' room or selling any comics. The only guaranteed place you will see me is at the life drawing session Friday afternoon, run by the lovely and talented Chillymouse, film2edit. There are general human, fursuit, and nude(!) sessions scheduled with live models, so bring your own materials and stop by the Elm room, 2 - 5PM (general/fursuit) and 9 - 11PM (nude). I say this cuz, uuuuuuuhh...I've volunteered to be one of the models ^ ^;; in the general human section, 2 - 3:30. Yes, yes, I'm sure it's a shock to most of you. I don't consider myself remotely photogenic, but this ain't photographs, and I *do* have an unusual body type (squat, stocky Japanese genes FTW), and the point of live models is to have some variety. So. Yeah ^ ^;; Any of you artist types who have free time around then, please drop by. While Ms Chillymouse had good success with this last MFF, supposedly if it goes well she's looking to expand this to Anthrocon as well, and she managed to increase the time block here, so please spread the word make it worth our while :-) Hope to seeya there! Simple Shakshuka
The shakshuka at Cafe Hillel leaves one feeling nostalgic, so I've been tinkering with the concept and after a couple of tries came up with this. It doesn't have much in the way of exotic spicing, but goes from kitchen to table with about 5 minute's knifework and 30 minutes stovetop. Simple ShakshukaOne medium onion, medium dice. Two Bell Peppers, medium dice. One Can (28 oz/800g) diced or crushed tomatoes. A splosh of lemon juice (probably two Tbsp) Four eggs. One clove garlic, minced One half tsp Salt One half tsp Black Pepper Olive or Grapeseed oil sufficient to saute in a 10" pan Heat a 10" pan (I prefer cast iron for this) and add oil. Saute the onions with the salt and black pepper. As they become translucent, and the garlic, then the peppers. Deglaze with the lemon juice, then add the tomatoes. Simmer uncovered to reduce the liquid by about half. Break the 4 eggs over the sauce and cover until eggs reach desired doneness (tradition dictates a set white with a runny yolk-about 4 minutes). Serve with Pita or Challah. A garnish of steamed spinach creates a nice contrast on the plate Serves 2. Parve. |

3 Pages and Book 2 preordering!

A tiny tiny bit more is revealed about the Bottle Woman. I've been planning a lot of this story with big lists of bits of information in the order in which they should be revealed; I guess that makes this sort of a mystery story? I like tension. Also I like this beautiful watercolor picture that I got in the mail from Dylan Meconis yessss. Ok my friends let's talk about this second Order of Tales book. FIRST OF ALL you can preorder it right now. All preorders should be sent out within a month. All preorders will have a FREE drawing on the title page of a subject of your choice; this will cost 5 dollars more when the book is in stock. It matches the first book in format, is 80 pages longer (hence, 5 dollars more), and has a similar appendix detailing the civilizations of Horneds and Machine Men. I was talking about trying to go through Kickstarter for this thing but upon much deliberating and conversating I don't think it's a good idea yet. I would rather have both books immediately available than to wait a few months (through the fundraising period, and through the time it takes to print). I do plan on using Kickstarter for a certain thing in the future, for which I believe it would be more suited. The only relevant information here for YOU is that you can get the second book pretty soon. I have found some really wonderful comics recently and I want you to know about them please! The first is Sam Hiti's Death Day, which is being published online a chapter at a time. Fascinating, beautifully drawn military science fiction and I love it! The second is Anne Szabla's Cealdian, which is set in a sort of invented world developed out of real history, and is super pretty to look at. These are not very good descriptions but I think you should have a look at these comics! Ok bye! |

I am not as bad as this. : p http://graphjam.com/2009/03/03/song-chart-memes-find-mates/Okay... you know what? I know when a joke is a joke. It's kind of funny and too silly/dumb to warrant being picked apart like the commentators on that post were doing. *rolls eyes* Yes, I will get annoyed when somebody tries to cite "arctic penguins" as some kind of scientific fact. I will get annoyed when people refer to rabbits or hedgehogs or - God forbid - ferrets as rodents. I also differentiate between hares and rabbits, I know that there is more than one species of hedgehog and I am not under the delusion that domestic ferrets are descended from the stoat/ermine. But even I know a joke when I see one! XD Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: AC/DC - "Back in Black" |

The only reason this page was late is because I was lazy and procrastinated. The puppet gag feels kind of like an homage to the absurd humor present in the comic's early days. You know, my friend Tucker made a Death puppet for me a long time ago. It's adorable. You can see it in the Slightly Damned site's fanart gallery. oh man...
Oh noes, here it comes. I actually spent most of the day out and about, driving around the city with my sister so that I'd feel better. But now I'm feeling a sense of needless anxiety and angst that is not even being triggered by anything... I know this feeling and it's not good. >_> Quick, I need to distract myself... *looks around* Ah, the DS! I'll play some pokemon. Bleh. I really wanted to work on comics tonight. But mental health is a priority. Current Mood: anxious |

And in other news, no good deed goes unpunished
I was helping Mom lift some books on to a bookshelf. One of them fell and knocked Sam's arm clear off. With some Krazy Glue, clay and a sharpie I got it to look like this. Stage 1: Stage 2: I probably will forget it's even there after a while... but I'd better remember this when I have to move him. Current Mood: sigh |

Devon is on his way to Kuwait right now, I guess I'm sorry if I've seemed kind of angsty or cranky lately. I'm doing okay and even though I'm used to this sort of thing by now it still isn't easy. I still have to adapt. Even though I live with my sister I am still kind of alone since Devon isn't with me. Even though we talk on the phone and online I feel like I'm not getting all the love and affection I need just because he isn't here to snuggle with me and be a friend like usual. Just bear with me. [Another] 15 Minutes of Fame!
Those of you following me long enough will recall that while I was living in North Yorkshire, England, I picked up a 1975 Land Rover Series III that a couple of months after acquiring it, it gained a small amount of fame in a February, 2001 article in Land Rover Owner International titled How Much Land Rover Can You Get For £4,000? I later "smuggled" it back to the States by exploiting a loophole in the company's contract -- a loophole that was quickly closed once I took advantage of it! Beating all odds, my Landy has done it again! This time appearing in the monthly spread World of Land Rovers in the very same magazine! I am however a bit miffed that LROI called my integrity as a Classic Land Rover Owner into question by suggesting that it had been towed there! ( Photos! ) |
